On August 30, 2009, Lars Nordström was surprised to learn that he was the 2008 recipient of the annual Scandinavian Heritage Foundation Niskanen Award for "Outstanding cultural and educational achievement by a member of the Scandinavian community." The award was in recognition of his recent book Swedish Oregon, "Chronicling Our Immigrant History."

On June 16, 2009, Finn Afzelius guided Lars Nordström to the Harry Martinson plaque on Strandvägen in Stockholm.
