The
fish have disappeared from a fjord in northern Norway. Nobody understands why,
but the grown-ups have become concerned. Worry seeps into their talk. The
children become aware of it too, and one evening Pavva hears his father sing a
strange yoik about seven kinds of water. Later, when Pavva asks his grandfather
what the yoik means, his grandfather relates a myth about the Sun’s Daughter.
Pavva does not fully understand the answer he is given, but decides to make the
sad daughter of the Sun happy again. To succeed, Pavva knows he must collect
seven kinds of water. But what are they?
There are many dangerous and amazing places in the land by the fjord, and
Pavva’s attempt to carry out his mission is filled with dramatic and exciting
events.
Seven Kinds of Water is a wonderful read-aloud book.
It received the Sami Council’s Literature Award in 2002.
Ciezain caziin (Seven Kinds of Water) was originally published in Sami in 2002.
The title of the book comes from a traditional yoik lyric, but the story is
original.
